Fringe Fest Flyer (08/06)

It is with some wistfulness that I write this post, as it describes the final edition of the 2010 Fringe Fest Flyer. As always, it's been a great pleasure to participate (even in a tangential way) in the exciting, vital theatrical carnival that is the Fringe. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank CFCR, SaskLotteries, the performers, and *you* (the listeners) for making this show possible and, as a result, giving me the best imaginable summer job!

In today's program, you'll hear a thirty second review of Wanderlust, as well as interviews with Amy Lester (from The Unhappy Barista), Randi Miller and Adrianna Boucher (from Marion Bridge), and Jacklyn Green (from Much More Munsch!).

Progess (31 down, 5 to go)

As revealed by the title of this post (spoilers!!), I've now seen the majority of shows in this year's festival, which has caused me to revise my Top Picks (as can be seen below). I'd heartily recommend any of the shows mentioned below, though each for distinct reasons... My favorites run the gamut from high-energy musical theatre to one-handed storytelling shows, though they are united by their multifaceted approaches to their respective subjects: each carefully balances humor, pathos and reflection (albeit in different proportions).

With that wordy introduction aside, here is my current Top Six:

  • Death: LIVE!
  • Elephant in Zulu
  • The Guitar Teacher
  • The Only Friends We Have
  • The Sputniks
  • Wanderlust

Other notable productions include: When Harry Met Harry, The Eternity Project, The Pig of Happiness, Shorts, Marion Bridge, Rum and Vodka, One Man Riot, and Biome (though the last is only recommended if you enjoy dance theatre and are willing to engage with it).

Also, the technical difficulties discussed in my previous post have now been resolved, which means that you can now listen to episodes of the 2010 Fringe Fest Flyer online. Thanks to Jay (CFCR's talented and lovely program director) for getting this sorted out.

Tonight Only: Special Ticket Offer for 'When Harry Met Harry'

$5 TICKETS - TONIGHT ONLY (July 29th) for When Harry Met Harry when you say the password ('PRINT DEPARTMENT') at the door. (Regular ticket price $12)

Show starts at 8pm at Victoria School North, Entrance from 12th Street.

Fringe Fest Flyer (07/29)

In today's program, Andrew Keith and I discuss our favorite picks from Fringe Eve (the official Fringe Festival preview night), which include Daydream, Die Roten Puncte: Kunst Rock, Hockey Dad, The Only Friends We Have, The Pig of Happiness, The Sputniks, and Wanderlust. Even though this was a fairly exhaustive conversation, it still fails to encompass all of my favorites from preview night, as it doesn't mention The Guitar Teacher, Elephant in Zulu, and When Harry Met Harry - all of which I'm quite looking forward to.

You'll also hear interviews with Martin Dockery (writer and star Wanderlust), as well as interviews with Joel Crichton and Jon Lachlan Stewart (the writers and two cast members from Death: LIVE!). During our interview, Jon made a wild offer: if you call his cellphone ((780) 700-4235), he will give you a free ticket to a Death: Live! showing of your choice. One would be foolhardy not to take advantage of such an offer.

Note: I plan to host my programs online again this year, but due to technical difficulties will not be able to do so today. I will post a link to a downloadable version of today's show ASAP.

Back in the Saddle (Fringe 2010)

Hello loyal listeners and Fringe partisans,

I'm ecstatic to be back for my third consecutive year hosting the Fringe Fest Flyer for CFCR 90.5 FM. Things are off to a great start for me this year! Not only have I already assembled nine interviews before the first day of Fringe festivities (accounting for a pretty sizable portion of my content requirements for the show), but I'm also really excited about this year's festival. A large contributor to my current zeal is last night's Fringe Eve preview performance (emceed capably by Berkley Staite), which was fun and engaging, providing tantalizing snippets of many of the great shows that I'll have a chance to see over the course of the festival. I can hardly wait!

As always, I promise that I will see all of the shows in the Main Fringe (and will, if possible, also attend the Kid's Fringe performances as well).

See you out there!
